Personal Learning Styles

Personal Learning Style

Introduction

As part of the module, we were tasked to complete a set of questionnaires in order to find out which type of learning styles better suit us. To be specific, there were four different questionnaires in which results showed the learning styles that we liked. These include:
VARK (Visual, Aural, Reading, and Kinesthetic)
Myers and Briggs
Belbin
Honey and Mumford

VARK – Aural

The main aspect of this type of questionnaire is to highlight what type of learning style does an individual prefer. This essentially resulted in different answers for different people. There is the visual learner who prefers learning different things through the aid of visuals. This means that this type of person usually takes in information via pictograms, graphs, visual demonstrations, and other forms images.  The other type of learner usually takes in information easily if someone was talking directly to them. For example, if an instruction was given by a teacher to a student by talking to them directly instead of telling them to read to be able to understand. Another type of learner includes the one who takes in information via reading materials. This simply means that person would find valuable information through reading. They would typically spend most of the time reading to be able to understand. The last type of learning style in this category includes kinesthetic. Ultimately, this type of learner is an individual who prefers to learn through demonstrations. It essentially puts more emphasis on the practical side of learning and taking in information. For example, this type of learner will do well in driving lessons as they are learning through first hand practice as opposed to learning through reading materials and being told to do so.

After completing the questionnaire, I found out that my learning style of represented by Aural. As mentioned before, this essentially mean that I prefer to learn and take in information through different aural materials. When there is class presentation and the presenter is talking, I will be able to collect important information as I will be able to fully understand what they are saying. Not to mention, this also means that when there is an assignment brief that I have to read through, I would much prefer if the teach told me direct what each section has asked me to do.

As you can see, this is a screen shot of the results which the questionnaire produced according to my answers. The result shows that I prefer learning by someone talking to me.
The result also states several tips in which I can use this style effectively.  The two-top point includes, “attending lectures” and “attend tutorials”. This also connects back to the short-term goals in which I had set myself.

Myers and Briggs - ENTP

This questionnaire mainly focuses on the personality aspect of an individual. It essentially tests how a person perceives the world around them and how they implement daily activities. Within this questionnaire, there are four different categories to it. This includes Extrovert, Intuitive, Thinking, and Perceiving.  Extrovert typically indicates that an individual would prefer to direct their “energy to deal with people, things, or situations” (Team Technology 2017). Ultimately, this individual usual deal with different situations by being extrovert with their thoughts and actions. Intuitive is an individual “who prefers to deal with ideas, look into the unknown, to generate new possibilities or to anticipate what isn’t obvious” (Team Technology 2017). This essentially mean that this type of person would prefer to come up with different ideas according to their own thoughts and decisions. They would normally consider different possibilities and are not usually common sense.

The ‘Thinking’ section of the results normally indicates that this individual would normally deal with” facts, what you know, to have clarity, or to describe what you see,” (Team Technology 2017). This means that this person would deal with information based on what they already know, or think is the norm. they would not make intuitive decisions. They would rather take information based on how it is normally done.

Thinking part of the questionnaire usually depicts are person who decide “on the basis of the objective logic, using an analytic and detached approach” (Team Technology 2017). This means before an individual decides on a task, they would normally think it through using logic and analyses. The last part of this type of questionnaire is ‘Perception’. This describes an individual who likes “to go with the flow, to maintain flexibility and respond to things as they arise” (Team Technology 2017). This make this understandable, this type of person would normally not create plans or goal whenever completing different tasks and activities. They would simply improvise as they go along.

The result of this questionnaire indicated that I scored high percentage on ‘Thinking’ and ‘Perceiving’. This means that personally, I would deal with different situations based on my thoughts. Essentially, whenever I am faced with a problem or a task, I would normally analyse carefully, plan ahead, and use logic to overcome them. However, in some aspect, whenever I am completing a tasking, I would sometimes simply go with the flow. I would not think much about it if it is an easy task. Similarly, if I am faced a problem, instead of thinking ahead, I would try my luck and just go with the flow.
